Rick Rubin Returns to NYU Dorm Room Where Def Jam Was Born

It's been nearly 30 years since Def Jam Records founder and record producer Rick Rubin was last at the location of where it all started for him.

Recently, the music industry legend made a trip back to his New York University dorm room where it all began. Rolling Stone went along for the trip and caught it all on camera. The film, created by MaggieVision Productions and director Josh Swade shows Rick walk into Weinstein Hall, room 712 and reflect on his time there.

"I can't believe it's 30 years," he said. "It's really trippy." Rubin also described the energy of the 1980s and recalled all of his encounters with people who would end up being legendary in their own right.

Rick Rubin began Def Jam Records in 1984. Since then, the prestigious Hip Hop label has released some of the most coveted albums in the genre's history. He was also heavily influential in the budding careers of Jay Z and Kanye West, among others.
