Obie Trice Recalls Eminem's Reaction To Proof's Death

Obie Trice says a lot of people were killed following Proof's death, comments on D-12's gradual disbandment.

A little over seven years after the untimely death of Detroit rapper Proof, fellow Detroit emcee Obie Trice spoke with Vlad TV about the mood immediately following Proof’s passing. When asked how Proof’s good friend, Eminem, was affected by the death, Obie revealed that the rapper took it hard, but says that mostly everyone took Proof’s death to heart.

“Yeah, that was his mans,” said Obie. “So, I remember when that situation happened and we had to go to the hospital and shit. It was me, Em, and the whole D-12 went in the room. And just saw him laying there like that. It was just a—everybody was just fucked up. You know what I’m saying? It was just a fucked up time. And I’m sure he took it as hard as all of us or even harder being how close he was. But, you know, that didn’t matter. Everybody took it hard. That was just a rough, rough period.”

Obie also shared the details of what he was told happened the night of Proof’s death. According to the rapper, the incident resulted due to a scuffle about a pool game, with some saying that Proof was the first to shoot. He says Proof was ultimately shot by a bodyguard at the club whose cousin was also killed as a result of the shooting. The Detroit emcee later revealed that the violence that night continued long after the shooting ended.

“A lot of shit happened after that,” said Obie. “Like a lot of people ended up getting killed. A lot of shit. A lot of shit was going on after that. But that’s just how it is though. You know what I’m saying? I don’t believe my man actually stay there though. I don’t think he stay there no more.”

The status of D-12 following Proof’s death was also discussed during Obie’s interview with Vlad TV.

“Well, they was still going,” said the rapper. “They was still doing they thing, but that was just—that was a group. So, I don’t know what happened with them with that. I mean, Proof was a part of that group. So, maybe they didn’t feel it no more or something. I have no idea what happened with that.”

As a former Shady Records signee, Obie Trice is featured on The Eminem Show track “Drips” and is included on two songs on the 8 Mile soundtrack. Following his signing, he would later go on to release his debut album Cheers via Shady Records/Interscope in September 2003 before leaving the label years later in 2008.
